The Blue Pool
The Blue Pool
The Blue Pool earns its name through remarkable natural chemistry. This former clay pit has filled with spring water that, depending on weather, season, and light—shifts from brilliant turquoise to deep sapphire to emerald green. The colour comes from clay particles suspended in exceptionally clear water, scattering light in ways that create those almost unreal hues.
The pool sits within 25 acres of woodland and heath. When extraction ceased, nature reclaimed the landscape, creating this unexpected oasis. The water’s clarity is extraordinary, you can see substantial depth, watching trees and sky reflect in that startling blue-green surface.
Woodland paths circle the pool and wind through the surrounding nature reserve. The walking is gentle, suitable for all fitness levels, with multiple viewpoints offering different perspectives on the water and its colour.
The Colour Show: The pool’s colour genuinely varies dramatically. Bright sunny days bring out the most vivid turquoise. Overcast conditions create deeper blues. Early morning and late afternoon light are particularly magical for photography.

Nathan and Laura's English tip:
While not a grand attraction, The Blue Pool offers something genuinely distinctive. It pairs perfectly with Corfe Castle (just minutes away) or can combine with Lulworth and the Jurassic Coast for a varied Purbeck day. This is one of those quieter attractions that rewards guests seeking beauty over spectacle.
