Highclere Castle

Highclere Castle

The moment those honey-coloured stone towers come into view across manicured parkland, you understand why Highclere Castle became the star of Downton Abbey. This isn’t merely a filming location—it’s a living Victorian masterpiece where the 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon still reside.

Yet Highclere’s story transcends its television fame. The castle’s soaring Gothic Revival architecture, designed by Sir Charles Barry, architect of the Houses of Parliament, would merit pilgrimage even without Downton’s allure. The estate encompasses 1,000 acres of parkland designed by Capability Brown.

The Hidden Treasure: Most visitors rush through to photograph the Downton rooms and miss the extraordinary Egyptian Exhibition in the basement. The 5th Earl of Carnarvon funded Howard Carter’s excavation of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, and the artefacts displayed here tell that legendary story with museum-quality curation.
