Cheddar Gorge & Caves
Cheddar Gorge & Caves
England’s largest gorge announces itself with dramatic flair. As limestone cliffs soar 450 feet on either side of the winding road, you realise this is raw, ancient geology carved by Ice Age meltwater over a million years.
We begin with perspective. Nathan drives you through the gorge itself so you grasp the full scale before exploring on foot. The show caves are genuinely spectacular—Gough’s Cave descends into a subterranean cathedral where stalactites drip like frozen waterfalls.
Feeling energetic? Jacob’s Ladder challenges you with 274 steps carved into the cliff face. The panoramic views across Somerset from the top are genuinely earned and utterly worth the effort.
Our Exclusive Experience: We arrange private cheese-making lessons where you’ll learn traditional methods and craft your own Cheddar to take home. This hands-on experience connects you to centuries of Somerset tradition.
Useful info:
Time needed at destination: Half-day (full day if adding Wells)
Average travel time: One hour 30 minutes
Nathan and Laura's English tip:
On the drive home, we keep eyes peeled for farm stalls selling freshly picked strawberries. Arriving back at Well Cottage with sun-warmed strawberries and champagne is the perfect ending.
