Butser Ancient Farm

Butser Ancient Farm

Butser Ancient Farm isn’t a museum, it’s a working archaeological experiment where the past lives and breathes. Set in 40 acres of Hampshire countryside, this extraordinary open-air laboratory reconstructs Iron Age and Roman Britain through hands-on archaeology, rare breed animals, and meticulously researched ancient buildings.

The farm operates as genuine experimental archaeology. Roundhouses are constructed using only tools and techniques available in Iron Age Britain. Walking through reconstructed Iron Age villages, you’ll enter roundhouses with thatched roofs—the interiors reveal how our ancestors actually lived.

Interactive Experiences: Depending on when you visit, you might grind grain using a quern stone, try flint knapping, help with ancient cooking, or participate in traditional crafts. The hands-on activities transform passive observation into active learning.

Nathan and Laura's English tip:

Special event days throughout the year include Iron Age cooking demonstrations, Celtic festivals, Roman military displays. This isn’t a polished attraction—it’s authentically rustic and educational, perfect for guests who appreciate substance over spectacle.
