Athelhampton House
Athelhampton House
Athelhampton House represents one of England’s finest medieval manor houses – a Grade I listed treasure continuously inhabited for over 500 years. Built in 1485, this stunning example showcases the transition from medieval fortress to comfortable Renaissance home.
The Great Hall immediately captivates, one of the finest surviving medieval halls in England, with magnificent timber roof, hammerbeam construction, and enormous oriel window. The linenfold paneling, minstrels’ gallery, and heraldic glass speak to the wealth of the Martyn family.
The Gardens: Designed by Inigo Thomas in the 1890s, they represent Victorian formal gardening at its most ambitious. The topiary pyramids are famous—massive yew structures maintained for over a century, creating almost surreal geometric precision.

Nathan and Laura's English tip:
Athelhampton works beautifully as a half-day visit or combines well with other Dorset attractions. The gardens are maintained to exceptionally high standards. Spring weekends can be busy—we recommend weekday visits for a more contemplative experience.
