Here are our UK top tips for the weather
Some of our frequently asked questions…
Q. What’s the best time of year to visit?
A. England is beautiful year-round, and the best time to visit depends on your preferences and what you’d like to experience.
Spring (March – May): Mild temperatures, blooming gardens, and countryside coming to life. Perfect for garden enthusiasts and those who enjoy pleasant weather without summer crowds.
Summer (June – August): Warmest weather, longest daylight hours, and peak season for outdoor activities. Ideal for beach days, coastal walks, and enjoying the gardens in full bloom. This is our busiest season.
Autumn (September – November): Beautiful fall colors, harvest season, and fewer crowds. Comfortable temperatures and stunning countryside views as leaves change color.
Winter (December – February): Festive atmosphere, cozy cottage days, and authentic English winter experiences. Our Festive Winter Itinerary offers a magical Christmas experience. Cooler temperatures but beautifully atmospheric.
Weather Considerations:
England’s weather is famously unpredictable regardless of season. Rain is possible year-round, but we’re equipped with wellies, raincoats, and backup plans to ensure you enjoy your vacation whatever the weather brings.
Each season offers its own unique charm—the “best” time is simply the time that works best for you. For more detailed information, visit our When to Visit page.
Q. What should we pack for England’s weather?
Pack layers and be prepared for changing conditions—England’s weather can be unpredictable, even within a single day.
Essential Items:
Layered clothing – T-shirts, long sleeves, sweaters, and a warm jacket
Pants and shorts – Depending on the season and your activities
Waterproof jacket or raincoat – A lightweight, maybe even foldable, rain jacket. Rain is always possible (bring your own or use ours)
Comfortable shoes – Sneakers or comfortable open-toed sandals for everyday activities
Comfortable walking or hiking shoes – If wanting to walk or hike, bring shoes that are broken in and suitable for varied terrain
Smart casual attire – For dining out and evening meals at the cottage. Whilst most dining out is very casual, smart attire is also accepted
What We Provide:
Wellies (wellington boots) for wet conditions
Raincoats and umbrellas
Fleeces for cooler days
Backpacks for excursions
Walking sticks
Seasonal Additions:
Spring/Autumn: Medium-weight layers, light jacket
Summer: Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, but still bring a sweater for cooler evenings
Winter: Warm coat, gloves, scarf, hat
Don’t Overpack:
Laundry facilities are available at the cottage, so you can refresh your wardrobe during your stay and pack lighter. The key is flexibility—dress in layers you can add or remove as the weather changes throughout the day.
Q. When are children in England on their school summer holidays?
School summer holidays in England typically run from mid-July through early September, approximately six weeks.
Typical Timeline:
Summer holidays begin: Mid to late July (usually around July 20-25)
Summer holidays end: Early September (usually around September 1-5)
Why This Matters:
If you prefer to avoid popular tourist attractions being crowded with school groups and families, we recommend booking outside of the UK school holiday periods. During term time (September through mid-July, excluding other school breaks), attractions are generally quieter and you’ll experience a more peaceful visit.
The Plus Side of School Holidays:
The atmosphere in the summer during school holidays is thriving and exciting, and you get to meet many more people. The countryside and attractions come alive with energy and activity during this vibrant season.
Planning Around School Holidays:
Nathan is familiar with the UK school calendar and can help you choose dates that align with your preferences—whether that’s avoiding the busiest family travel periods or, conversely, if you’re traveling with children and would like to visit during school holidays when family-oriented activities are in full swing.
Other UK School Holiday Periods to Note:
Half-term breaks: One week in February, May/June, and October
Easter holidays: Two weeks around Easter (March/April)
Christmas holidays: Two weeks over Christmas and New Year
Let us know your preferences, and we’ll help you select the perfect dates for your English Cottage Vacation.
