The History
Well Cottage has been welcoming weary travellers for centuries. Our beloved cottage began life as a traditional drovers’ inn, where the well and original “heart” of the house provided essential rest and sustenance for hardy tradesmen journeying by horse and cart along the ancient routes to London.
These stone walls have witnessed countless stories – traders sharing tales by flickering candlelight, horses resting in what are now our gardens, and the constant rhythm of rural English life that has flowed through this special place for generations.
Whilst Well Cottage has grown and evolved over the centuries, we’ve lovingly preserved its most treasured original features:
– The ancient thatched roof, hand-laid using traditional techniques
– The magnificent inglenook fireplace, where countless fires have warmed countless souls
– The original bread oven, once the heart of daily life
– Thick stone walls that have weathered centuries of English seasons
– Low-beamed ceilings that whisper of simpler times
Today, Well Cottage continues its timeless tradition of hospitality – though now Laura and Nathan provide the welcome, and luxury has replaced simplicity. Yet the spirit remains unchanged: this is a place where travellers find comfort, warmth, and the genuine care that has made Well Cottage special for over three centuries.
You’re not just staying in a cottage – you’re becoming part of its continuing story.
