Some of our frequently asked questions…
Q. How do dietary restrictions and food preferences work with the included meals?
A. Your culinary experience at English Cottage Vacation is completely personalized to your dietary needs and preferences. Chef Laura creates every meal specifically tailored to your requirements—whether you follow a vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, Kosher, Halal, or any other specialized diet. Laura accommodates all dietary requirements and restrictions without compromise.
Before your arrival, you’ll complete a detailed preference form where you can outline any dietary restrictions, allergies, favorite foods, and dishes you’d love to try. Laura uses this information to craft menus that not only accommodate your needs but celebrate them. From a seven-plate tasting menu for dedicated foodies to classic British comfort food or fresh, organic seasonal dishes, every meal is designed around what you’ll love.
Using the finest locally sourced organic produce and artisanal ingredients from trusted Dorset suppliers—much of it straight from Well Cottage’s own garden—Laura ensures every bite is both safe for your dietary requirements and absolutely delicious. No request is too big or too small, and adjustments can be made throughout your stay if your preferences change.
Q. How many meals per day are included, and what about snacks or late-night cravings?
Every day at English Cottage Vacation includes comprehensive culinary service designed to keep you perfectly satisfied from morning until night:
Daily meals included:
Breakfast – A hearty or light start to your day, prepared to your preferences
Lunch – Enjoyed at the cottage, or a gourmet packed picnic lunch for excursion days
Afternoon tea/canapés – Traditional English treats or elegant small bites
Three-course dinner – A decadent evening meal with restaurant-quality cuisine
Snacks and beverages: A curated selection of snacks is available throughout the day for you to enjoy at your leisure. Whether you fancy a mid-morning biscuit with tea, an afternoon treat, or a late-night nibble, provisions are always on hand.
Late-night cravings: A snack basket is available for guests to access after Laura has finished in the kitchen for the day, ensuring you have something to enjoy if hunger strikes in the evening.
Q. Is afternoon tea or traditional English cuisine part of the experience?
Absolutely! Traditional English cuisine is an integral part of the English Cottage Vacation experience, and Laura will prepare anything you request.
Afternoon Tea vs. Cream Tea:
While Laura can accommodate any request, a full afternoon tea is more appropriately experienced during one of your excursions—such as in the historic city of Bath, where the tradition originated. At the cottage, Laura provides a delightful cream tea, featuring freshly baked scones served with clotted cream and jam alongside a proper pot of tea. She also offers an array of homemade cakes, including Dorset apple cake, Victoria sponge, and other classic British bakes.
Traditional English Cuisine:
Laura’s repertoire includes a vast variety of classic English meals prepared from scratch, such as:
Prawn cocktail
Sunday roast with all the trimmings
Cottage pie
Fish and chips
Beef Wellington
And much more
Traditional English Desserts:
Sticky toffee pudding
Eton mess
And many other beloved British sweets
Your Preferences Matter: The only time Laura wouldn’t provide a beautiful array of English recipes would be if you specifically requested not to have them or if you requested something completely different. Our preference forms thoroughly ask what types of food you’re interested in tasting and eating, including English cuisine, and offer ample opportunity to make special requests. Laura works from your preferences to create menus that celebrate British culinary traditions while honoring your personal tastes.
Q. Are portion sizes American-style, or smaller European portions?
Portion sizes at English Cottage Vacation are generally smaller than American-style restaurant servings. However, this is intentional and thoughtfully considered—since your evening meal consists of three full courses, Laura calibrates portion sizes to ensure you can comfortably enjoy each course without feeling overly full.
While individual portions may appear slightly smaller than you might be accustomed to at American restaurants, you will definitely not go hungry. In fact, our most common challenge is providing slightly too much food rather than too little—but you are on vacation, after all!
Laura is happy to adjust portion sizes to your personal preferences. If you prefer heartier servings or find yourself particularly hungry, simply let her know and she’ll increase portions accordingly. Throughout your stay, Laura pays close attention to your appetite and dining habits, making adjustments to ensure you’re completely satisfied at every meal.
