Q&A: Let’s Talk Thatch!
Thatch roofs are not only a charming feature of traditional English cottages but also a practical and sustainable roofing option. Here, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about thatched roofs, drawing from our experience with Well Cottage.
How often does a thatch need re-thatching?
Generally, a thatch has a lifespan of around 30 years. However, there are two parts to a thatch: the main thatch and the ridge. The ridge, which bears the brunt of the weather, needs replacing more regularly, approximately every 15 years. Well Cottage is due for a ridge re-thatch in 2-3 years.
What is a thatch made of?
Well Cottage’s thatch is made from water reed, a popular choice for its durability and aesthetic appeal. Other materials used for thatching include wheat straw and long straw.
Why do some thatches have chicken wire over the top?
Chicken wire is often used to prevent birds and other critters from nesting in the thatch or taking it for their nests elsewhere. At Well Cottage, chicken wire is used, but it’s only noticeable up close.
How much does a thatch cost?
The cost of re-thatching can vary widely, but on average, an entire thatch, including the ridge, will cost around £50,000.
Are thatched cottages more likely to catch fire?
The risk of fire in a thatched cottage is a concern but can be managed with proper precautions. Internally, the risk is low if chimneys are correctly lined, swept, and maintained. Externally, the risk increases with the right combination of heat and dryness. At Well Cottage, we adhere to strict insurance guidelines, ensuring no open fires within 100 metres of the cottage, and only lighting fires when the wind blows away from the cottage.
Does living under a thatch feel different?
Living under a thatched roof doesn’t feel noticeably different, apart from the character and charm it adds to the home. However, in the loft space, you can see the thatch, which is a unique feature.
What are the downsides of living under a thatch?
There are a few downsides, including higher insurance costs and the need for regular maintenance. Additionally, thatched properties can be harder to sell due to these factors.
Why are thatched roofs so steep?
The steep pitch of a thatched roof is designed for efficient water runoff, ensuring that water doesn’t linger on the thatch and cause damage.
Why do some roofs have a 3D ridge?
A 3D ridge is a decorative choice that adds visual interest to the roof. It is more expensive but offers a distinct and attractive look. Well Cottage has a 3D ridge, and we plan to maintain this feature during our next re-thatching.

Featured Excursion: The Blue Pool at Wareham
This month, we are thrilled to feature the enchanting Blue Pool at Wareham, located on the Isle of Purbeck, just a 45-minute drive from Well Cottage. This natural wonder is not only a stunning site but also a haven for wildlife and a perfect destination for a day trip.
The Blue Pool, formed in a disused clay pit, is renowned for its mesmerising turquoise waters, which change colour throughout the day due to the fine clay particles suspended in the water. This unique phenomenon creates an ever-changing palette of blues and greens, making it a photographer’s dream.
Natural Beauty and Wildlife
Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), the Blue Pool Nature Reserve is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. Visitors can explore the expansive Furzebrook Estate, where wildlife thrives in its natural habitat. Among the residents are shy Dartford Warblers, rare Green Sand Lizards, and magnificent dragonflies. You might also spot sika deer moving gracefully through the rhododendron thickets, and if you’re lucky, catch a glimpse of the majestic White-Tailed Eagle soaring above.
The reserve’s diverse ecosystems include heathland, woodland, and marsh, each offering unique sights and sounds. Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher, a nature enthusiast, or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, the Blue Pool has something for everyone!

Featured Great British TV: Fawlty Towers
This month, we shine the spotlight on one of the most beloved and hilarious British sitcoms of all time – Fawlty Towers. Originally broadcast on BBC Two in 1975 and 1979, this classic series was created by the comedic genius duo John Cleese and Connie Booth. It has earned its place in television history, being named the greatest ever British TV sitcom by a panel of comedy experts in 2019.
The Setting and Characters
Set in the fictional Fawlty Towers hotel in the seaside town of Torquay, Devon, the series revolves around the antics of the eccentric and often exasperated hotel owner Basil Fawlty, brilliantly portrayed by John Cleese. Basil is perpetually caught in a web of farcical situations, exacerbated by his snobbish and rude demeanour. His wife Sybil, played by Prunella Scales, is the practical yet sharp-tongued manager who often has to clean up the messes Basil creates.
Adding to the chaos are Polly, the sensible chambermaid (Connie Booth), and Manuel, the hapless Spanish waiter (Andrew Sachs), whose misunderstandings and language barriers lead to many of the show’s funniest moments. The dynamic between these characters, along with the bizarre guests and tradespeople they encounter, creates a comedic masterpiece.
Inspiration and Legacy
The inspiration for Basil Fawlty came from an actual hotel owner in Torquay, Donald Sinclair, whom Cleese described as “the rudest man I’ve ever come across in my life.” Sinclair’s eccentric behaviour provided rich material for Cleese and Booth to develop the character and the hilariously dysfunctional hotel setting.
Despite producing only 12 episodes over two series, Fawlty Towers has left an indelible mark on British comedy. Its witty scripts, expertly timed physical comedy, and memorable catchphrases (“Don’t mention the war!”) ensure it remains a timeless favourite. The show’s popularity endures through regular re-broadcasts and a devoted fan base.
Fawlty Towers on Stage
For those who can’t get enough of the chaos at Fawlty Towers, the beloved sitcom has been adapted into a stage play by John Cleese. Directed by Caroline Jay Ranger, this new production brings the hilarity of Torquay’s most chaotic hotel to life at the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue, London. The cast includes Adam Jackson-Smith as Basil, Anna-Jane Casey as Sybil, and Paul Nicholas as the Major, delivering all your favourite scenes from the original twelve episodes. The run has been extended due to popular demand until January 2025, making it a must-see for fans of the show.
For a taste of the comedic genius of Fawlty Towers, watch some of the funniest moments from the series below!
Featured British Saying: “Keen as Mustard”
This month, we’re diving into the origin and meaning of the classic British phrase, “Keen as mustard.” If someone is described as being “keen as mustard,” it means they are very enthusiastic or eager about something. But where does this quirky saying come from?
The phrase “keen as mustard” dates back to the 17th century. Mustard was highly valued for its sharp, pungent flavour, and by the early 1900s, the phrase had become popular to describe someone with a sharp, eager disposition. The word “keen” itself means sharp or intense, much like the taste of mustard, making it a fitting comparison for someone full of enthusiasm.
Interestingly, the phrase is first recorded in William Walker’s “Phraseologia Anglo-Latina” in 1672, showing just how long this colourful saying has been part of the English language!
At English Cottage Vacation, we love seeing our guests being enthusiastic about their holiday experiences. Whether it’s eagerly exploring the beautiful Dorset countryside with Nathan or diving into one of Laura’s gourmet meals, there’s always something to be “keen as mustard” about!
Featured Recipe: Laura’s Cherry Scones with Clotted Cream
Makes 12 – 16 medium scones
Ingredients
- 450g/1 lb self-raising flour
- 2 level tsp baking powder
- 50g/1¾ oz caster sugar
- 100g/3½ oz butter, slightly softened, cut into pieces
- 2 free-range eggs
- A little milk
- 250g rinsed, drained and chopped glace cherries (optional)
For the topping
- Strawberry jam or your favourite Jam.
- Clotted Cream
Method
- Preheat and Prepare Trays: Set the oven to 220°C (200°C for fan ovens) or Gas Mark 7. Lightly grease two baking trays.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and sugar. Add the butter and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: Crack the eggs into a measuring jug, then add enough milk to reach a total volume of 300ml (10fl oz). Stir the egg and milk mixture into the flour using a fork or a round-tipped knife. Mix until you have a soft, sticky dough—note that you may not need to use all the liquid.
- Prepare Cherries: Rinse, drain thoroughly, and quarter the cherries.
- Incorporate Cherries: Lightly flour your work surface and gently knead the dough. If using cherries, work them into the dough. Roll the dough out to a thickness of about 2cm (¾ inch).
- Cut and Arrange Scones: Using a 5cm (2 inch) fluted cutter, cut out as many rounds as possible and place them on the prepared baking trays. Brush the tops with a little extra milk or any remaining egg and milk mixture from the jug.
- Bake: Bake the scones for 10–15 minutes, until they are well-risen and a very light golden-brown colour. Transfer them to a wire rack to cool.
Serving: For serving, split the scones and add a layer of strawberry jam on the scone halves, followed by a generous amount of clotted cream.
Fun fact: Cream or Jam First? The debate over whether to put cream or jam first on a scone is a deliciously contentious topic, rooted in regional traditions. The “Devon method” advocates for spreading a generous layer of clotted cream on the scone first, followed by a dollop of jam. Meanwhile, the “Cornish method” starts with a layer of strawberry jam, which is then topped with a spoonful of clotted cream. Whether you prefer the Devon or Cornish style, both methods offer a delightful way to enjoy this classic British treat, celebrating the perfect combination of sweet and creamy flavours.
