Featured Great British TV: ‘Allo ‘Allo!

Step into wartime France with the hilarious world of ‘Allo ‘Allo!, a sitcom that has secured its place in British television history. Airing from 1982 to 1992, this side-splitting series takes us to the small town of Nouvion, where café owner René Artois juggles life under German occupation with a colourful mix of Resistance plots, stolen paintings, and secret romances.
Penned by the legendary duo David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd, ‘Allo ‘Allo! is a masterpiece of farce, blending physical comedy, catchphrases, and cleverly exaggerated accents to create a uniquely British take on wartime humour. From René’s endless attempts to hide British airmen and smuggle The Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies, to the bizarre schemes of Resistance leader Michelle and Gestapo agent Herr Flick, the show is packed with absurd antics and unforgettable characters.
Among its iconic moments, you’ll find:
- Officer Crabtree’s hilariously mangled attempts at speaking French (“Good moaning!”)
- The temperamental Colonel von Strohm and his efforts to conceal his stolen art.
- Edith’s unforgettable singing performances that René endures with his trademark exasperation (“You stupid woman!”).
Despite its comedic chaos, ‘Allo ‘Allo! offers more than just laughs. It cleverly parodies wartime dramas like Secret Army while paying homage to the resilience and camaraderie of the time.
Although the series concluded over 30 years ago, its charm endures, with stage productions and reruns introducing new audiences to its unique humour. In 2018, the famous Fallen Madonna painting even fetched £15,000 at auction – proving its place in pop culture!
Why not settle in at Well Cottage with a lovely cuppa and enjoy this classic slice of British humour? With its larger-than-life characters, clever plot twists, and running gags, ‘Allo ‘Allo! is the perfect way to unwind while we cater to your every need!

Featured British Saying:
“Taking the Mickey”

If you’ve ever heard a Brit say someone’s “taking the mickey” (or “taking the mick”), they’re talking about a good old-fashioned ribbing – making fun of someone, often in a playful, teasing way. It’s a quintessentially British phrase, capturing the nation’s love for humour, wit, and banter.
For example: If your mate shows up late to a dinner party and you say, “Nice of you to join us, Your Majesty,” you’re taking the mickey. Or if someone wears an outlandishly loud shirt, a cheeky “Going to a disco, are we?” might follow.
What Does It Mean?
To “take the mickey out of someone” means to gently mock or poke fun, though it can occasionally be used in a more cutting way. Whether it’s playful teasing or good-natured banter, the phrase is deeply embedded in British culture and shows that humour is at the heart of everyday interactions.
Origins of the Phrase
The exact origins of “taking the mickey” are debated, but it likely derives from “taking the Michael”, an old slang term for making fun of someone. Over time, “Michael” was shortened to “Mickey,” and the phrase became widely popular from the mid-20th century. Some even suggest it has roots in Cockney rhyming slang, where “Mickey Bliss” stood in for “piss,” as in “taking the piss” – another classic British phrase!
Famous Examples
Even some of the UK’s most iconic figures aren’t safe from a bit of mickey-taking. Pete Townsend of The Who once quipped: “I occasionally take the mickey out of Mick, but nobody takes the mickey out of Keith Richards and gets away with it.”
And in Harry Potter, Luna Lovegood’s eccentricity leads Ron Weasley to frown and ask:
“Are you taking the mickey?”
When to Use It
“Taking the mickey” is usually harmless and light-hearted – a friendly way to connect through humour. Whether you’re teasing a loved one about their quirks or joking with a mate about their taste in football teams, it’s all in good fun.
So, next time you’re in Britain and someone gently mocks your mispronunciation of “Worcestershire,” don’t take offence – they’re just taking the mickey!
Why not try out some mickey-taking yourself during your stay at Well Cottage? Just be sure to bring your best sense of humour! 😉
