Local area focus: Shaftesbury Abbey Museum & Gardens

History amid the blooms (image source: Shaftesbury Abbey Museum & Gardens)
Just ten minutes from Well Cottage is one of Dorset’s most quietly captivating treasures, the historic Shaftesbury Abbey Museum & Gardens.
This remarkable site invites you to step into over a thousand years of English history, where stories of kings, faith, and daily life unfold in the most atmospheric of settings.
Founded in AD 888 by King Alfred the Great, the abbey was once the most important Benedictine nunnery in England, a place of great wealth, influence, and devotion. Although much of the original structure was lost during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, what remains today has a magic all of its own.
As you wander through the peaceful ruins and thoughtfully curated museum, you begin to sense the rhythm of life that once filled this sacred space. Saxon stonework, medieval artefacts, and beautifully preserved floor tiles offer a tangible connection to centuries past, bringing history vividly to life.
Beyond the museum, the gardens provide a completely different kind of enchantment. Designed with inspiration from medieval planting traditions, they are a haven of colour, fragrance, and tranquillity.
Seasonal flowers bloom in soft abundance, herbs once used for healing and cooking grow in carefully tended beds, and ancient fruit varieties quietly echo the abbey’s self-sufficient past.
It is a place that encourages you to slow your pace, breathe deeply, and simply be present.
What makes this visit so special is not just the history, but the feeling it leaves with you. There is a stillness here that is rare and deeply restorative. Combined with a stroll along nearby Gold Hill (pictured below), one of England’s most recognisable and picturesque streets, it becomes an experience that lingers long after you have left.
It is exactly the kind of hidden gem we love to share with our guests. Unassuming, deeply authentic, and quietly unforgettable.

MAKE THIS HAPPEN – REACH OUT NOW!

We’ve paved the way for a smoother stay!
This winter we decided to widen the driveway, mostly to give our guests a bit more room to get in and out of the car during their stay.
It really does make such a difference. No more awkward door juggling or squeezing past – just a much easier, more comfortable arrival and departure, which is exactly what we wanted!

From left, before – it was a tight squeeze; during – Nathan in the digger; after – without the van and with the van for perspective… look at all that space!
A little swing in the right direction!
You may have seen our recent post on social media about the swing in the garden, and we wanted to share a little more of the story with you.
During the high winds this past winter, we unfortunately lost a large branch from our beautiful weeping silver birch. On closer inspection, the branch showed signs of fungus, so it was necessary to remove it completely to protect the health of the tree.
The good news is that we’ve carefully checked the rest of the tree, and the remaining main branch is healthy and unaffected. Of course, this did mean saying goodbye to the original spot for our much-loved swing. But we’re pleased to say it’s now been thoughtfully repositioned onto a strong, healthy part of the tree – and, if anything, it’s an even lovelier place to sit and enjoy the garden.
Sometimes these unexpected changes lead to something even better, and we think this is one of those moments. We look forward to welcoming you back to enjoy it!

“The only vacation in thirty-five years of traveling that we returned home more relaxed than when we started”
(and more kind words from our recent guests)
We feel incredibly grateful to welcome such wonderful guests through the doors of Well Cottage, and it means the world to us when their time here leaves a lasting impression! Here’s a recent reflection that truly touched us:
“An unbelievable experience delivered with panache!
My husband and I spent two weeks with Nathan and Laura at English Cottage Vacation with a friend joining us for one of those weeks. We have traveled independently throughout England, but chose to book this vacation because we had a bucket list of Dorset sites to see and things to do. We did them all in great style and without any hassles. How often does that happen?
But the best part of our vacation (well, besides Laura’s fabulous food) was Nathan’s enthusiasm for Dorset and his willingness to share the interesting nooks and crannies. Would you believe an archeological museum in a shepherd hut?
We saw more and experienced more than we could have done on our own AND it is truly the only vacation in thirty-five years of traveling that we returned home more relaxed than when we started.
Do not hesitate to make your own adventures with Nathan and Laura!” – Virginia S, TripAdvisor
We never take words like these for granted! It’s a genuine privilege to share this little corner of Dorset, and to play a small part in creating memories that stay with you long after you’ve returned home.
Have you been a guest of ours? We’d be so grateful if you can share your experiences on TripAdvisor and Google Reviews too! Also be sure to check out the testimonials featured on our website!

Featured excursion: West Bay and Bridport

The East Cliff at West Bay in Dorset
If you want to experience the Dorset coast properly, this is the day.
With Nathan at the wheel, the journey itself becomes part of the experience. You might begin at Max Gate, once home to Thomas Hardy, before joining one of the most beautiful coastal routes in England.
The landscape unfolds gently through Abbotsbury, Hive Beach, Burton Bradstock and Seatown, each stop offering its own quiet charm before the coastline opens up in full at West Bay.
Here, the cliffs rise golden and dramatic above the harbour, instantly recognisable from the award-winning TV drama Broadchurch, yet even more striking in person.
This stretch of the Jurassic Coast is also world-famous for its fossils, and with a little curiosity and a keen eye, you may even find a piece of ancient history resting among the stones.
Just moments away, Bridport brings a completely different energy. A lively, characterful market town filled with independent stores, antique shops, and a creative spirit that feels unmistakably local.
And then, one of our favourite moments… Nathan sets out the gourmet picnic hamper prepared by Laura as a lovely table and chairs in a carefully chosen spot overlooking the sea. It is simple, elegant, and quietly unforgettable. Amazing food, a glass in hand, and the Jurassic Coast stretching endlessly before you.
This is not just a visit. It is a full day of discovery, contrast, and those small, perfect moments that turn into lasting memories!

From battlefield to silver screen, the ‘Fury’ tank’s amazing story

The captured Tiger 131 tank (image source: Tank Museum)
Tucked away here in Dorset, at the remarkable Tank Museum not far from Well Cottage, sits one of the most famous tanks in the world, Tiger 131.
The only one of its kind still in running condition today, it had a starring role alongside Brad Pitt in the blockbuster Fury. and its story has just become even more fascinating.
A new book by Dale Oscroft sheds fresh light on the dramatic wartime moment when this formidable German tank was captured in North Africa in 1943. His father, John, was there during the battle and even attempted to disable the tank himself. Although his weapon failed to stop it, fate intervened moments later when a well-placed strike jammed the turret, forcing the crew to abandon it. That single moment led to the tank’s capture, preserving it for history.
For years, the exact details of how Tiger 131 was taken had remained uncertain. Through careful research, Oscroft has now connected the dots, confirming his father’s presence at the very scene and revealing the true significance of the encounter in the final stages of the North African campaign.
Today, visitors can see this extraordinary piece of history up close in Bovington. It is a powerful reminder that even here in the peaceful Dorset countryside, there are stories that reach far beyond these rolling hills, linking this quiet corner of England to pivotal moments in world history.

A Taste of Well Cottage: What Is a Full English Breakfast?

There are few culinary experiences more quintessentially English than the full English breakfast: a hearty, comforting tradition that has been setting the tone for the day for generations.
At its heart, a full English is a celebration of simple, honest ingredients, cooked beautifully and served generously. It’s the kind of breakfast that invites you to slow down, savour each bite, and truly settle into the rhythm of countryside life.
So, what makes it a full English?
At Well Cottage, Laura’s version brings together all the beloved classics. Think perfectly crisp, golden-streaked bacon; locally sourced sausages cooked just right; free-range eggs with rich, sunshine-yellow yolks; buttery sautéed mushrooms; and sweet, blistered vine tomatoes that burst with flavour. Add to that a spoonful of baked beans in their comforting, savoury sauce, and thick slices of toasted bread ready to be slathered with butter… and you have a plate that feels both indulgent and deeply satisfying.
And you can also add… black pudding, a traditional favourite with a rich, savoury depth, or even white pudding for those wishing to explore beyond the classic line-up.
The origins of the full English breakfast date back to the 13th century, when it was seen as a symbol of hospitality and abundance; a way of welcoming guests with generosity and care. Over time, it evolved into the iconic morning feast we know today, often enjoyed as a leisurely weekend treat or when dining out.
Because make no mistake, this is not an everyday, on-the-go breakfast. It’s a moment.
Here in England, it’s something we tend to savour slowly, perhaps on a relaxed weekend morning. But at Well Cottage? If this is how you’d like to begin each day of your stay… Laura will happily oblige!
Imagine waking to the gentle stillness of the Dorset countryside, the soft morning light spilling through the windows, and the irresistible aroma of breakfast already drifting through the cottage. The sizzle of bacon, the warmth of freshly brewed tea or coffee, the comforting scent of toast just crisped to perfection…
It’s the kind of start to the day that lingers long after the last bite.
And with days spent exploring the many wonders of Dorset ahead of you, you’re sure to walk it off in no time!
