Featured Great British TV: Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special and More!
This Christmas, Gavin & Stacey returns to our screens with a highly anticipated new special airing on BBC One and iPlayer at 9 pm on Christmas Day! Titled Gavin & Stacey: The Finale, this festive episode will finally resolve the cliffhanger that left fans on the edge of their seats for nearly five years: will Smithy accept Nessa’s heartfelt proposal?!!
A Look Back at Gavin & Stacey
Originally airing from 2007 to 2010, Gavin & Stacey captured the hearts of viewers with its witty and heartfelt portrayal of love, family, and friendship. Written by James Corden and Ruth Jones, the series follows the romance of Gavin from Essex and Stacey from Wales, whose union brings together two very different families.
The show’s charm lies in its unforgettable characters, including the hilariously blunt Nessa, the lovable Smithy, and Pam’s iconic outbursts. After a nine-year hiatus, Gavin & Stacey returned with a Christmas special in 2019, drawing over 18 million viewers and reigniting fans’ love for this cultural phenomenon.
What to Expect from the 2024 Christmas Special
The new special picks up five years after Nessa’s surprise proposal to Smithy. Viewers will revisit Barry and Billericay as the beloved characters navigate new chapters in their lives. Creators James Corden and Ruth Jones promise a clever and heartwarming finale that will tie up lingering storylines while delivering plenty of laughs.
For long-time fans, this is a must-watch event that captures the spirit of British comedy at its finest. In addition, the BBC will air a companion documentary, Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell, offering behind-the-scenes insights and reflections from the cast and crew.
The Story Continues in 2025
While the Christmas Special may mark the end of the TV series, Gavin & Stacey is set to return in a different form. In Autumn 2025, Corden and Jones will release a new book, When Gavin Met Stacey and Everything in Between: A Story of Love and Friendship. The book will delve into how the duo created the series, sharing behind-the-scenes stories and the creative journey behind this beloved show.
Don’t Miss It!
Gather around this Christmas and join millions of fans in celebrating this iconic series. (If you’re in North America, you can stream the special on Britbox on December 26!) Whether you’re revisiting old episodes or diving into the new special, Gavin & Stacey is the perfect holiday treat. And with exciting new projects on the horizon, the story will continue to warm hearts for years to come!
Here’s the trailer for the upcoming Christmas Special!
Featured British Saying: “Nutty As A Fruitcake”
The phrase “nutty as a fruitcake” is a wonderfully quirky expression that perfectly captures the playful nature of British humour. It’s used to describe someone who is eccentric, unconventional, or acting in a delightfully peculiar way. Bonkers! Whether it’s Aunt Margaret wearing a feather boa to Christmas lunch or a neighbour decorating their entire garden with flashing reindeer, “nutty as a fruitcake” is an affectionate way to celebrate individuality and whimsy!
Where Did It Come From?
The term nutty has been around since 1821 as slang for “insane,” and by 1935, it found its perfect partner in the fruitcake – a dense, rich dessert packed with fruits, nuts, and spices. Given that fruitcake is as colourful and elaborate as some of the characters it’s meant to describe, it’s no wonder the phrase stuck!
And of course, the British tradition of fruitcake – especially at Christmas – adds an extra layer of charm. With its boozy-soaked fruits, crunchy nuts, and festive flair, the fruitcake is as unique as the personalities it’s often compared to!
Fruitcake at Well Cottage
At Well Cottage, Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a homemade festive fruitcake, lovingly baked with a dash of brandy, a generous helping of dried fruits, and just the right amount of nuts (not too nutty, though!). Whether enjoyed with a slice of cheese (a British tradition) or on its own by the fire, it’s a treat that’s as timeless as the saying itself!
So, the next time someone calls you nutty as a fruitcake, take it as a compliment – after all, who doesn’t love a little bit of delightful eccentricity, especially during the festive season?!!
Featured Excursion: Castle Combe and Lacock Village
This month, we’re focusing on an unforgettable day trip to two of the most picturesque locations in England: Castle Combe and Lacock Village.
Both are around a 90-minute drive from Well Cottage through lush, rolling countryside, making this the perfect excursion for those who love history, beauty, and a touch of cinematic magic!
Castle Combe: A Step Back in Time
Often called the “prettiest village in England”, Castle Combe is a tranquil gem nestled in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Wandering through its cobbled streets feels like stepping into another world!
Highlights:
- Cotswold Stone Cottages: Adorned with climbing roses, these historic homes have stood untouched for centuries, with no modern buildings added since the 1600s!
- The Market Cross: At the heart of the village, this 14th-century structure harks back to Castle Combe’s bustling wool trade days.
- Unparalleled Peace: With no streetlights or visible power lines, Castle Combe offers an idyllic escape from modern life.
- Famous Filming Spot: Movie buffs will recognise the village from Doctor Dolittle, Stardust, and War Horse!
Take your time exploring the quiet streets and soak in the picture-perfect charm of this quintessential Cotswold village.
Lacock Village: History, Charm, and Cinema
Next, we’ll visit Lacock Village, a National Trust-owned treasure packed with history and cinematic connections. Known as the “home of photography”, it was the birthplace of the photographic negative thanks to Henry Fox Talbot. Today, it’s a favourite filming location for period dramas and fantasy films alike.
Highlights:
- Lacock Abbey: Founded in 1232 and later transformed into a country house, it boasts stunning architecture and peaceful grounds.
- The Tithe Barn: A medieval treasure perfect for exploring.
- St Cyriac’s Church: A 14th-century gem with exquisite stained glass.
- Cinematic Connections: Walk the streets that starred in Harry Potter, Downton Abbey, Cranford, and Pride and Prejudice. You might even spot the village cross or buildings that featured in these iconic productions!
- Quaint Village Charm: Lacock’s cobbled streets are dotted with charming tearooms, traditional pubs, and unique shops.
A Perfect End to Your Day

Did You Know? Where Christmas Crackers Come From!
Christmas wouldn’t feel complete without the festive pop of a Christmas cracker at the dinner table – but have you ever wondered where this quirky tradition began? The story of the Christmas cracker dates back over 150 years to Tom Smith, an enterprising London-based confectioner.
In the 1840s, Smith was inspired by the French bon bon – a sugared almond wrapped in a twist of tissue paper. These sweet treats proved popular at Christmas, but Smith’s inventive mind sought to make them even more special. He added love mottos inside the wrappers, and in 1847, inspired by the crackling sound of a log fire, he patented the first cracker featuring an explosive “pop.”
By the 1860s, crackers as we know them began to take shape. Smith’s son, Walter, introduced the iconic paper hats, sourced novelties and trinkets from around the world, and expanded the range of designs to suit all kinds of celebrations. These crackers were lovingly handmade, and by the 1890s, the family business had grown to employ 2,000 workers in a bustling factory.
From Luxury to Wartime Simplicity
As crackers grew in popularity, they became a mirror of the times. Designs and contents evolved to reflect trends, from jazz-inspired motifs to commemorations of major events like the end of the First World War. During the Second World War, paper rationing and restricted access to the materials needed for snaps temporarily curbed production. However, the cracker industry rebounded in the post-war years, with Tom Smith & Co. producing 30,000 crackers a week by the 1950s.
Modern-Day Crackers
Today, crackers range from affordable fun-filled versions to luxury designs fit for a royal table. In fact, the Tom Smith brand continues to produce crackers for the Royal Household, with designs and contents kept as closely guarded secrets. Whether you’re pulling crackers for the jokes, the hats, or the small surprises within, you’re part of a festive tradition that has brought joy to millions for over a century.
So, when you reach for a Christmas cracker this holiday season, remember its fascinating history – and enjoy the timeless magic of its “pop”!
